Subject: Token-Ring Set Maximum Packet Size
Date: October 23, 1990

PROBLEM: 1) A customer was trying to copy a file from the
workstation to the file server and recieved "Error sending
on network". He would receive the same error when he would
do an NPRINT. He could copy files from the file server to
the workstation with no problem.
2) A customer had NetWare 386 v3.1 running on a Compaq 386
SystemPro. The SystemPro had one of Compaq's 32 bit Token-
Ring adapters in it. The problem was that none of his AT
machines could copy a binary file to the file server. He
would get "Network error...". All of his XTs or Micro
Channel machines worked fine. All of the Token-Ring cards
were running at 16Mb.
This problem only occurred with binary files.
3) A customer was running Token-Ring 16/4 adapters and
NetWare 386 v3.1. When he tried to access any application,
the workstation would just sit there and the file server's
"No ECBb Available" count would start incrementing until it
hit twenty. The workstation would then get "Error receiving
from network."
4) A customer upgraded from NetWare 386 v3.0 to v3.1. There
were no other changes. They had an IBM Model 80 with 8MB of
RAM, IBM 320MB SCSI drive, and Storage Dimensions 320MB
drive with a Procomm DCB. They were using a Token-Ring
topology. After the upgrade workstations would drop off,
they couldn't create files, and they couldn't invoke
WordPerfect. Workstations with local hard disks worked,
although the local hard drive was not being used. They were
using the new Token-Ring and DCB drivers from NetWire.
SOLUTION: What needs to be done is to set the packet size to the
maximum. The way to do this is to edit the STARTUP.NCF
file. Add in a line "set maximum receive packet size =
4202". This will make it so that the server will be able to
receive a packet larger that 1024 (which is the default).
